EAST STROUDSBURG | Ryan Appleby took second place at the 51st Annual East Stroudsburg Open Sunday afternoon to highlight the 23rd-ranked Kutztown University wrestling team’s season-opening action at Koehler Fieldhouse.

KU had 22 wrestlers compete in the season-opening tournament, 15 of which won a match.

Appleby, Kutztown’s returning All-American, rattled off three-straight wins to put him in the championship match. He defeated three Division I opponents (West Virginia, Maryland, Rutgers) to put him in the title match against Drexel’s Joey Goodhart, who pinned all three of his opponents leading up to that point. Appleby battled through a low-scoring affair against Goodhart, ultimately dropping a 5-2 decision in his first action of the season.

Connor Rogovich battled through the consolation bracket at 165 for a 3-1 record on the day. He opened with a 17-6 win over his Division I-opponent from Bucknell. After dropping a match, he won two in a row

by a combined 23-6 margin to cap his day.

Redshirt-freshman Austin Scrivani opened his first season with KU with two wins on Sunday. He posted two major decisions at 141 against opponents from Maryland and Rowan to outscore his opponents, 32-10, in his three matches of the day.

The Golden Bears return to action on Friday, Nov. 17, with a dual match at sixth-ranked Pitt-Johnstown. Action starts at 7 p.m.
