D2CCA will sponsor regional and national basketball polls this season for the fourth time. The regional poll is determined by a six-man committee comprised of two representatives from each of the region’s three conferences (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, Mountain East and CIAA). The national poll, with two sports information director representatives from each of the eight NCAA Division II regions, will be released each Tuesday, beginning tomorrow, Nov. 7.
It is important to note that this is not the official poll that will ultimately decide who makes the NCAA
Tournament at the end of the season.
Indiana (Pa.) was picked first with three of the six votes and 56 total points. Defending PSAC champ Shippensburg is second with two first-place votes and 50 points. NCAA National runner-up Fairmont State, Wheeling Jesuit (one first-place vote) and West Liberty round out the top-five.
Virginia State and Virginia Union come in at sixth and seventh, just ahead of KU, which has 20 overall points. Shepherd and East Stroudsburg make up the final two spots of the top-10.
Gannon, Notre Dame (OH) and Bowie State are receiving votes.
The defending PSAC East Division champion Golden Bears were recently tabbed second in the PSAC East, voted on by the league’s coaches, and also received votes in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Preseason Poll.
Kutztown enters the 2017-18 season on the heels of a 26-4 record last year, winning its second straight PSAC Eastern Division title.
The Maroon and Gold returns three starters, including senior Ethan Ridgeway, redshirt-junior Anthony Lee and junior Dan Cuevas. Ridgeway, Lee and Demetrius Bennett were named team captains for the season.
KU opens up the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 6 p.m. at Keystone Arena against Penn State Schuylkill.
