KUTZTOWN | The Division II Sports Information Directors of America released its first women’s basketball poll of the 2017-18 season on Monday, with the Kutztown University women’s basketball team being voted No. 10 in the Atlantic Region.
KU received four points in the preseason poll, joining Edinboro University, East Stroudsburg University and Indiana University (PA) as the four Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)
members to appear in the rankings. Additionally, PSAC-members West Chester University and Seton Hill University sit just outside the top-10, with both receiving votes in this week’s poll.
The Women’s Basketball Division II Media Poll, sponsored by D2SIDA, is in its four years of existence. The regional poll is released every Monday, followed by the national poll every Tuesday. Each region has six representatives that comprise the regional poll. The national poll has 16 voters – 2 from each region.
Fresh off its highest win total since the 2012-13 season, the Golden Bears are looking to build on last season’s success, which saw them advance to the PSAC playoffs for the seventh time in the last nine seasons. A big part of that will be determined by the play of reigning PSAC East Freshman of the Year, point guard Sierra Taylor. Taylor started all 31 games and averaged 11.2 ppg and 4.2 apg in her first season sporting the Maroon and Gold.
In support of the do-it-all point guard, head coach Janet Malouf will be relying on a mixture of veteran leadership and new faces to guide Kutztown to this team’s postseason aspirations. Veterans Kalee Fuegel and Keifonna Ferguson can be expected to contribute heavily this season, both with their on-court play and off-court leadership qualities, especially with such a young group. Malouf has a squad of six incoming freshman and sophomore-transfer Jenna Widdicombe from West Chester, some of whom can be expected to play significant minutes as well.
At No. 10 and receiving four total votes, the Maroon and Gold are tied with Shaw University and sit one point behind ninth-place Bowie State University.
KU begins its season with exhibitions at Fairleigh Dickinson University on Oct. 26 and at Division-I University of Massachusetts on Nov. 3. The regular season begins on Nov. 10-11 with the Wolf’s Bus Lines Classic at Shippensburg, facing off with Bowie State University and Wheeling Jesuit University. PSAC play then begins on Nov. 18 at California University (PA).
