Junior Kelly Groth of the Kutztown University women’s track and field team did it again. A little over one month, and just one meet, after she broke the school record in the 60m, she followed it up by setting another new school record, this time in the 55m to lead a number of Golden Bears who saw success Friday afternoon in the Golden Bear Invitational at O’Pake Fieldhouse.

Groth crossed the finish line in 7.23 in the prelim and actually came in just a hair shy in the final, winning the 55m at 7.24. She also placed first in the 200m with a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)-qualifying mark of 7.24.

Five other KU individuals won their respective events and eight new qualifying marks were accomplished in highlighting the Maroon and Gold in action Friday.

Joanne Mason won the triple jump in her first jump event this season with a personal-best mark of 11.34m (37-02.50), which ranks fourth all-time in program history. She also set a new mark in finishing second in the 55m hurdles at 8.64.

The pole vaulters had a successful night. Ally Tama cleared a personal-best mark of 3.40m (11-01.75), ninth all-time. Katie Seegert and Abigail Zeger each collected new PSAC-marks of 3.30m (10-10.00) and 3.20m (10-06.00) respectively. Zeger’s was a personal-best.

The high jumpers also had three qualifiers as freshman Taye Dairo, Becca Hemingway and Shelby Samuels all jumped to PSAC marks. Dairo measured a best of 1.65m (5-05.00), Hemingway was 1.60m (5-03.00) and Samuels had a 1.55m (5-01.00). Dairo and Hemingway also competed in the long jump and recorded PSAC marks, while freshmen Jerenita Sokan (16-04.25) and Kathleen Silverman (14-11.25) both accomplished personal-bests this season.

Ashley Petre came out on top in the weight throw with a qualifying mark of 15.47m (50-09.25), followed by Olivia Morano with a PSAC throw of 13.60m (44-07.50) Staci Jett (33-06.50) and Rebecca Schweitzer (28-06.50) each had season-best throws. Morano had a top-three finish in the shot put at 10.30m (33-09.50).

Kutztown had five runners in a large field in the 400m. Meghan Forsythe and Ashley Stewart finished one-two at 1:00.96 and 1:01.32 respectively, both were new PSAC marks for the duo. Julia Wiemken ran a personal-best time of 1:03.84, while Julie Stratton (1:04.91) and Angela Iaccarino (1:05.08) all finished in the top-seven.

Two KU 4×4 relay teams placed in the top-three. Stewart, Iaccarino, Dairo and Forsythe crossed the finish line in first at 4:16.02 and the team of Wiemken, Kira Solt, Stratton and freshman Devon Montanari were third at a time of 4:25.02.

Sophomore Dootleen Joseph ended at the head of the pack in the 1000m with a personal-best time of 3:24.22.

Montanari was fourth in the 800m at 2:32.50 and classmate Lynne O’Connor competed in her first collegiate meet in the mile, finishing with a time of 5:56.93.

Kutztown is back in action next Friday, Jan. 18 at the NYC Gotham Cup in Staten Island, N.Y.
