KUTZTOWN – Eight members of the Kutztown University track & field teams earned All-Region status across 12 events on Monday from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), KU’s most in a season since 2013.
Steve Maine led the way with three All-Region accolades – the mile, 3000m and DMR. Also named to the DMR were Cameron Christopher, Elgin Horton Jr. and Jared Luckanitz, who also earned recognition in the 800m.
In the field, Kyle McLaughlin, McKenzie Fagan and Shelby Samuels all earned All-Region honors in the high jump. Brandon Raguz was named in the pole vault, and Ashley Petre in the weight throw.
The eight honorees are KU’s most since having 10 athletes post 12 All-Region honors in the 2013 outdoor season.
The top-5 individuals in each event from each region earned All-Region distinction, in addition to each
of the members of the regions’ top-3 relay teams.
Maine’s two school-records this indoor season earned him individual All-Region accolades in the mile and 3000m. He ran 4:16.09 in the mile on Feb. 9, at the Fastrack National Invite in Staten Island, a school-record and third in the region this year. In his school-record 3000m run, Maine finished in 8:33.57 at the NYC Gotham Cup on Jan. 19, ending the season third in the region.
The distance medley relay team had its best performance of the year at the 20th Annual Bison Open on Jan. 26. The team of Maine, Luckanitz, Christopher and Horton Jr. finished in 10:28.88 (converted to 10:20.46) for third in the region.
Luckanitz had the DMR and the 800m on his All-Region resume this season. A three-time All-Region runner for KU, Luckanitz ran the fifth-best time in school history of 1:55.44 at the Bison Open, converted to 1:54.90 for fifth in the region.
Three high jumpers were tabbed as All-Region. McLaughlin ranked fifth in the region and second in school history at 6-10.25 from the NYC Gotham Cup, KU’s best high jump performance since 2010. Fagan and Samuels tied for fourth in the region at 5-5.75 this season. Fagan, a three-time All-Region jumper, posted the mark at the Golden Bear Invitational on Jan. 11, while Samuels followed at the Bison Open for fourth in school history.
Raguz, a senior pole vaulter and five-time All-Region honoree, ranked second in the region and tied for 18th in Division II this season. He had his season-best mark on Feb. 3 at the Susquehanna Challenge, clearing 16-4.75, as he hopes to qualify for nationals later this week.
Petre earned her first career All-Region honor in the weight throw. She ranked fourth in the region from her career-best mark at the PSAC Championships last weekend, Feb. 24, of 52-10. It ranks Petre sixth in school history.
The outdoor season for the Golden Bears begins on Saturday, March 24, at the Golden Ram Invitational at West Chester University.
