Cuevas notched a career-high scoring night with 24 points. His previous high was 23, recorded in a win over Lock Haven last Jan. Ridgeway finished with a season-high 23 points and three assists in 35 minutes of action.
Unlike their season-opening 55-point victory (135-80) against Penn State Schuylkill last Saturday, the Golden Bears (2-0 overall) had to fight until the very end.
The Devils (2-1) trailed by as much as nine early in the second half, but pushed forward and took a 48-47 lead on a 3-pointer by Paddy Casey with 13:43 remaining. But KU would outscore Sciences 23-13 over the next 7:38 to take a 70-61 advantage.
The Devils would get as close as four, 70-66, with 4:23 to go, but the Maroon and Gold answered with nine of the next 11 points, and never led by fewer than nine the final three minutes.
Kutztown opened its regular season 2-0 for the third straight season.
It took everything they had and then some to fend off Sciences.
After KU found itself up 19-18 at the 10:48 mark of the first half, the Devils took the lead on a Casey layup, and led for the next 7:13until Anthony Lee scored on a layup to put Kutztown up 35-34 with 3:35 left. The Golden Bears then got 3-pointers from Lee and Ricky Hicks on consecutive possessions to take a 41-34 edge into halftime.
Flo Da-Silva did all he could to keep the game competitive for Sciences. He played 39 of the 40 minutes and scored 24 points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out eight assists. He also took 23 shots from the field, seven more than the next closest player.
Lee played a team-high 39 minutes and tallied 14 points and four assists. Hicks also finished with 14 points on 4-of-4 shooting.
Moe Williams ended his night with a career-and-game-high 14 rebounds to go along with eight points.
Max Wagner saw his first action of the season, and ended with three points and three rebounds. Josh Townsend contributed two points and four rebounds in the win.
Kutztown will open up Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play with two games this weekend. It will play at California (Pa.) on Saturday, Nov. 18 and at Slippery Rock on Sunday, Nov. 19. Both tips are set for 3 p.m.
