KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Senior Morgan Staley, junior Alyssa Ryan and sophomore Emily Zwiercan of the Kutztown University women’s soccer team were recently selected to the 2017 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District 2 Women’s Soccer Team.
The Golden Bears are three of the 11 student-athletes honored as District 2 First-Team members, which is the most in the district.
The recognition honors the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performance athletically and in the classroom. First-team honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this academic year.
District 2 consists of 28 women’s soccer teams from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference,
Mountain East Conference and Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
Staley has earned her second CoSIDA Academic All-District honor to go along with 2016. She was recently named to the 2017 All-PSAC First Team, and was a NSCAA All-Atlantic Region Third team member as a sophomore.
The defender and two-year captain has started 19 of 20 games this season and has played in 67 games in her career. She has been the back bone of a defense that has 11 shutouts on the season and given up just 12 goals in 20 games. She also has tallied two goals and one assist on the year.
In the classroom, Staley is a four-time Dean’s List Honoree, a three-time P-S-A-C Scholar-Athlete, and a two-time Division 2 ADA Academic Achievement Award (D2ADA) winner. A Biochemistry major, she currently boasts a 3.88 GPA.
Ryan was recognized by CoSida for the first time in her career. A team-captain, she has earned PSAC Scholar-Athlete recognition twice, has been a Dean’s List Honoree four times, and a D2ADA Academic Achievement Award winner.
The North Wales, Pa. native has totaled four goals and four assists this season, and was named to the All-PSAC Second Team. The midfielder has started all 20 games and has played in 61 games throughout her career.
Ryan is a Biology/Pre-Medicine major and holds a 3.89 GPA.
Zwiercan, the PSAC Athlete of the Year, was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team for the first time. The First Team All-PSAC performer is a two-time Dean’s List member and was a PSAC Scholar-Athlete honoree last season.
The forward has earned Division II National Athlete of the Week honors and PSAC Athlete of the Week recognition after an 11-point week in early Sept. She has recorded 13 goals (fifth in PSAC), nine assists (first) and 35 points (third) this season. The nine assists and 35 points lead KU.
Zwiercan is a Business Administration major and has a 3.78 GPA.
Kutztown (16-3-1 overall) is looking for another postseason run in the NCAA Tournament when it opens up in the Atlantic Regional First Round Friday, Nov. 10 against Notre Dame (OH) at 12 p.m. at West Chester University.
