KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Coming off its highest win total since the 2012-13 season and its seventh trip to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) playoffs in the last nine years, the Kutztown University women’s basketball team has been selected third in the 2017-18 PSAC East Preseason Coaches’ Poll, as announced by the conference office on Thursday afternoon.

The senior trio of Jenna Altomare (Pennsylvania Furnace, Pa./State College Area)Alex Heck (Willow Grove, Pa./Archbishop Wood (Philadelphia U.)) and Kelsey Watson (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) teamed up with dynamic freshman guard Sierra Taylor (Williamstown, N.J./Camden Catholic) to lead the Golden Bears back to the playoffs last season for the first time since 2015. Finishing with a 13-18 overall record and 10-12 mark in PSAC play,

KU secured the No. 3 seed in the PSAC tournament, earning a first-round home game against the Millersville University Marauders. Having split with Millersville during the regular season, this postseason matchup came down to the wire, but the Marauders closed the game on a 21-6 run to claim a 69-65 victory.

2017-18 will feature a lot of new faces for Kutztown under head coach Janet Malouf, with six incoming freshmen and sophomore-transfer Jenna Widdicombe (Pottstown, Pa./Pope John Paul II (West Chester)) from West Chester University. However, Malouf will have the luxury of a solid core of returners led by Taylor, a point guard and reigning-PSAC East Freshman of the Year. Taylor started all 31 games and averaged 11.2 ppg and 4.2 apg in her first season donning the Maroon and Gold.

Kalee Fuegel (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) will team up with Taylor in the backcourt, as another experienced member of this Golden Bear team. Senior Keifonna Ferguson (Norristown, Pa./Norristown Area) will also be looked to for leadership and as a defensive presence in the paint, having averaged 5+ rebounds per game in each of the last two seasons.

East Stroudsburg University, who advanced to the semifinals of last year’s tournament, garnered seven of nine first-place votes and holds the top spot in this year’s poll. West Chester received the remaining two first-place votes and sits one spot ahead of KU at No. 2. Rounding out the poll, in order from 4-9, is Bloomsburg University, Shippensburg University, Millersville University, Lock Haven University, Cheyney University and Mansfield University.

KU begins its season with exhibitions at Fairleigh Dickinson University on Oct. 26 and at Division-I University of Massachusetts on Nov. 3. The regular season begins on Nov. 10-11 with the Wolf’s Bus Lines Classic at Shippensburg, facing off with Bowie State University and Wheeling Jesuit University. PSAC play then begins on Nov. 18 at California University (PA).
