KUTZTOWN | The Kutztown University field hockey team tallied two first half goals and then held firm defensively late in taking down Mansfield University 2-1 Tuesday night in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) game at Andre Reed Stadium.

Senior forward Madison Stewart (New Castle, Del./William Penn)found the back of the net less than two minutes in.

Then in the 21st minute, sophomore Kyra Wozniak (Plains, Pa./James M. Coughlin) deflected in a shot in front of goal off an assist by Stewart giving the Golden Bears (9-6 overall, 4-4 PSAC) a two-goal advantage midway through the first half.

It was Wozniak’s team-leading 11th goal on the season, which is also good for a tie for third in the conference.

The KU defense and senior goalie Chardonnay Hope (New Castle, Del./William Penn) came up big to close out the half. Hope finished the game with five saves, but made a couple of big stops to keep the Mountaineers off the scoreboard.

It continued to follow along that trend into the second half until Mansfield forward Dana Evans beat Hope with 2:18 remaining to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Mansfield held an advantage in shots on goal (7-6) and penalty corners (8-5), but the Golden Bears defensive unit held firm.

Hope and Kutztown were able to milk the rest of the clock without much trouble, and held on for an important PSAC victory.

Kutztown sits in sixth place in the league standings, one-half game ahead of West Chester University (9-6, 3-4) and a game in hand in the conference.

KU travels to #1 Shippensburg (12-2, 7-0) for a showdown on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 12 p.m.
