Preview: No. 2 Women’s Soccer hits the road to compete against Mansfield University

KUTZTOWN | This Friday, Oct. 13, the No. 2 Kutztown University women’s soccer team will take on Mansfield University on the road at the MU soccer field, at 4p.m.

KU is currently holding a 12-game winning streak and the Golden Bears are ranked number one in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) with 30 points. KU enters Friday with a record of 12-0 overall and 10-0 in the PSAC.

On WednesdayKaylee Kupiec (Deptford, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) scored the game-winning goal in the fifth minute in KU’s 1-0 victory vs. Shippensburg. The goal was the defender’s first of the

season and she’s now the 13th different goal-scorer for the Golden Bears this season.

Leading the Golden Bears in points is sophomore Emily Zwiercan(Reinholds, Pa./Cocalico), who has scored 10 goals and has added six assists. Additionally, she leads the PSAC in points, goals, and assists, while KU leads the PSAC in both total shots fired and goals scored.

Just behind Zwiercan in scoring is sophomore Maddie Mohr(Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown Area), with nine goals, followed by Randi Smith (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) with five and Kate Martin (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) with four.

Not only has KU’s offense been impressive, but its defense has been equally as strong. The combination of Kupiec, Morgan Staley(Landenberg, Pa./Kennett)Kristina Miller (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn)Anna Hull (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and goalkeeper Jenna Bracken (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional)have only allowed six goals this season. The unit has also contributed to eight total shutouts in 2017.

Bracken, KU’s sophomore goalie, currently holds a goals against average of 0.51 and has a save percentage of .882. Fellow goalkeepers Imani Taylor (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) and McKenna Zerbe (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) have also been successful this year and could see action on Friday.

The Mansfield Mountaineers hold a record of nine losses and one tie for the season. MU needs one of their best games to secure their first win in 11 games. Mansfield also took on Shippensburg earlier this season and lost 2-1 in overtime.

Leading the Mounties in goals are both Kersten O’Brien and Alexis Bittel, who each have one goal thus far. Also contributing on offense are Bria Bittinger and Eleni Gebbia, with a combined total of two assists.

In goal for Mansfield is Dana DiCamillo who has a save percentage of .649 as MU’s primary goalkeeper.

Following the game, KU will face off against Indiana University of Pennsylvania this Sunday, Oct. 15, at Keystone Field. Game time is set for 1p.m.
